There are over 250 species in the Clematis family made up of scramblers, ramblers, climbers and perennials ensuring there is Clematis to suit every garden temperament. Most Clematis are tendril climbers that will quickly make their way up trees or support systems provided by the gardener. Many are fragrant and quite a few of the species are evergreen. One of New Zealand's native Clematis, Puawhananga AKA Clematis paniculata is a vigorous climber that makes quite a show with fragrant white flowers in early summer. By way of contrast Clematis integrifolia is a dainty clump forming Clematis with delicate little bells of blue or pink. Clematis prefer their heads in the sun and their roots in the shade i.e. they need a cool root run with the ability to climb up towards the sun. They like a humus rich soil that does not completely dry out in summer. Clematis can be container grown as longs as their roots are kept cool.

Dark green fern like leaves and oh so pretty single white flowers that appear in abundance in the spring make this little Sweet Hart a must have. Its naturally scrambling habit make it perfect for draping over banks and walls and it looks great in a hanging basket. Evergreen.
